Goals are like wishing stars. They make our dreams come true.
Do you still remember the first step you took to reach a goal?
Do you still remember the feelings when you finally achieved your goal?
Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow toastmasters and guests, Good Evening.
My name is Nyla Irmamina Person - Burgos. My mother gave me this long name because I am the youngest out of her five daughters. Nyla means the champion. My mother taught me that in order to be a real champion in life, I should write my goals. She would always remind us that "a goal not written is only a wish!"
Later in my life, I learned that the realization of my wishes are goals in action. I'd still remember one of my goals in first grade. My teacher divided our chairs to four rows. The first row was composed of the brightest students in class. The second row was the smart kids, the third row was the mediocre students and the last row were students who needed extra time learning. Can you guess where I was sat? I was in the third row. Thus, my goal was to move up to the first row. I studied very hard, read my books before class and participated in different activities. By the end of the school year I was the first honor. GOALS IN ACTION HELP US SEE THAT A WEAKNESS CAN BECOME A STRENGTH.
In high school, I created my first vision board. I wrote down all of my wishes and dreams in this journal. I hung it on the wall where I could see it every single day.
- Study at the University of the Philippines - Los Banos
- Study Abroad - at Brigham Young University Hawaii
- Volunteer in Cebu as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- Graduate in College
- Work for Mickey Mouse
- Get married at 25 years old
- Have children
This vision board summarized the last two decades of my life. It's like a book turned into a movie. I can tell you even today, the feelings when I took the first step toward each goal. I was frightened. I had doubts. However, the joy that I am feeling right now is greater than those fears. GOALS IN ACTION GIVE DIRECTION TO MANY POSSIBILITIES. They are guiding stars in the dark nights.
My goal brought me to many places. From Los Banos, Laguna where I was born and raised to Angeles, Pampanga where I was hired as an executive secretary to the CEO of Pro Look Sports US. We make all kinds of athletic uniforms for export abroad. GOALS MEASURE OUR ABILITIES. Have you ever had goals that stretched you beyond your limits? Because of hard work, innate skills and goals in action, I was eventually promoted to Senior Vice President in the company at the age of 30 years old. I manage the overall operations of Pro Look Sports in the Philippines.
As a young leader and a mother at the same time, there are many challenges along the way. Every seems like a battle. That's why I set a goal to join Toastmasters Club where I am surrounded with champions in their own respective lives.
We can all be winners. It is in the achievement of our goals that we can become one. Never underestimate the power of wishing and making goals. Tonight, before you go to sleep, review your goals. If you haven't written them down, do it. For tomorrow when the sun calls you, make your dreams come true by putting one brave action at a time. Let us choose to be champions today.
